Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba in Canada. The city is named after the nearby Lake Winnipeg. Known as the "Gateway to the West", Winnipeg is a railway and transportation hub with a diversified economy. French traders built the first fort, Fort Rouge, on the site in 1738, marking the establishment of Winnipeg. It was incorporated as a city in 1873.

The Manitoba Legislative Building, erected in 1913-20, is a monumental reinforced concrete, steel and stone structure on a formal landscaped site between Broadway and the Assiniboine River in downtown Winnipeg. The provincial designation applies to the three-storey building and the grounds it occupies.
