Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba in Canada. The city is named after the nearby Lake Winnipeg. Known as the "Gateway to the West", Winnipeg is a railway and transportation hub with a diversified economy. French traders built the first fort, Fort Rouge, on the site in 1738, marking the establishment of Winnipeg. It was incorporated as a city in 1873.

The Lyric Theatre carries on the tradition of summer band shell entertainment in the park. The large outdoor stage features the Summer Entertainment Series with free performances for every taste and age, including jazz, symphony, Ballet in the Park, and the highly popular Movies in the Park.
